The propulsion system is one of the most complex systems in an automotive vehicle, heavily influencing other attributes and systems. Both electrical and mechanical interfaces are important. As example the engine breathing put requirements on intake and exhaust systems while heat rejection influences aero and thermodynamics of the vehicle. The propulsion system acts also as one of the major noise and vibration sources in the vehicle. In terms of fuel consumption and emissions the propulsion system plays the most dominant role.

The technical complexity of the propulsion system has increased over the last years due to customer requirements and regulations. New technical solutions for both engines and transmissions have been introduced due to more stringent emission regulations in order to e.g. increase energy efficiency.
